A power supply is an electrical device that converts one form of electrical energy to another. It is an essential component of any electronic device, as it provides the power needed to operate the device. Power supplies are typically classified by the type of input and output power, as well as by their efficiency.
The input power to a power supply can be AC or DC, and the output power can be AC or DC. AC power supplies are more common, as they are compatible with the power grid. DC power supplies are often used in devices that require a constant voltage, such as computers and smartphones.
The efficiency of a power supply is measured as the ratio of output power to input power. A power supply with an efficiency of 80% converts 80 watts of input power into 64 watts of output power. The remaining 16 watts of input power is lost as heat.
The most common type of power supply is the linear power supply. A linear power supply uses a transformer to convert the input AC power to a lower voltage AC power. The AC power is then rectified to DC power, and a filter capacitor is used to smooth out the output voltage.
Linear power supplies are relatively inefficient, as they waste energy in the form of heat. However, they are simple to design and manufacture, and they are relatively inexpensive.
Another type of power supply is the switching power supply. A switching power supply uses a switching regulator to convert the input AC power to a lower voltage DC power. Switching regulators are more efficient than linear regulators, but they are more complex to design and manufacture.
Switching power supplies are often used in high-power applications, such as computers and servers. They are also used in portable devices, such as smartphones and tablets, as they are more compact and efficient than linear power supplies.
